Location: Venice, Louisiana aka “The end of the world”
I cannot express how much I enjoyed Venice, Louisiana aka “The end of the world”. Although we didn’t fish, and nothing much there, we were able to explore from the RV. You are surrounded by the Mississippi River on both sides of the town and only two hills to block the water during storms. I told Damien when it floods here, you are pretty much in a “Land Pool”.
One of the hills was close to the property we were staying at and there was a road, so what do we do, Uriah and I followed it to see how far we could go, let me tell you, it was a walk! If we kept walking it would have taken us to the end of Louisiana. We ended up walking for 2.5 hours round trip and on the way back we were racing the sunset.
During our walk, we got to experience different ships passing us by. We were “Wowed” by them, we just could not get enough of them!! We were able to see the “Pilot” boats, load people onto the ships are they were passing by, when you look at the video, you may have to zoom in because they are so tiny compared to the ships. We also got to experience a tugboat in action and much more during the two days we walked that trail.
Then, there was a retaining wall where the hilltop stopped, there was a lot of trash washed up in that section and I was a little worried I would find something I didn’t want to find from the hurricanes. Thankfully, we only found shoes, flip-flops, busted coolers, large containers, deer hoofs randomly tossed, a rib cage (to a deer), etc. If you know Uriah, he was more excited to find bones than anything we passed, he was trying to take them home too… this kid! He has loved skeletons for as long as we can remember.
On our way back, he walked the retaining wall, which I called the “Great Wall of Louisiana”, and he explored all the bugs along the walk such as a black fuzzy caterpillar, and ant beds filling the section cracks of the wall, and lots of mosquitoes on the walk back (lesson learned, next day we brought spray with us!!).
We took the trip again the next day, this time Zander went with us, when we got to the wall, Zander didn’t want to ride in the "Veer" wagon and only wanted me to hold him or he wanted to push the wagon, then like most toddlers, would throw a fit if you tried to help them when it would get stuck. So, like a good toddler, he screamed and yelled the entire section, by the way, was about half a mile or close to a mile, and I swore the cops were going to show up at any time. Picture, this, all you see is a kid walking the retaining wall and you cannot see me or Zander, but you for sure can hear his screaming echoing through the housing area on the other side of the wall. Close to the end, he finally accepted the wagon and rode in it with ease.
Once we got up the hill, what was the 1st car we see driving past? A COP! At that very moment, I am pretty sure my heart stopped, and my blood pressure was rising as I started to panic internally because I was certain the cop was going to stop us to see what was going on, but he didn’t pay us any attention. I just knew my fears summoned the cops!
We did not walk back since Damien went and picked up some food from “Maws” to try, P.S. it is not good, and the chili cheese fries, the chili was wolf can chili (yuck). However, the fried Oysters were not bad, 1st time having them, but we will not return there again for food.
On Thursday, I had an early flight, 6 am to DFW, Texas for a wedding. We ended up getting an Airbnb through our business site (https://wolfpacktraveling.inteletravel.com/booktravel.cfm), we stayed on Franklin Street, which has some cute Mardi Gras decorations, since it started that coming up weekend. By the way, I did not know it was almost a month-long party, and the citizens of New Orleans that I have met were very helpful in providing us with the best locations for having smaller kids and the must-see floats for them.
The Airbnb we stayed at, it was, eh, the couch supposed to have been a pull-out bed, but was broke and the main bed, the mattress was not comfy at all!!! It was worse than the RV mattress, if you experienced the joys of rolling up to roll over, you know what I am referring to. We did love the area and if you are going to never be in the home, then it is perfect.
On Saturday, the last day there Damien found a park that was built after Hurricane Katrina, he stated the kids had a blast exploring the park, swinging, and playing on the skate park ramps.
Again, not much in Venice, LA but they are more known for fishing and tournaments, therefore in tournament season you really must book far in advance. We did not fish because it was not in our budget since it was a last-minute trip for us. I missed calculating a week between locations, and we thought, “Hey, let’s see how far we can go in Louisiana”. If you go visit, make sure you check out the rates and budget that in because I am sure it is amazing from researching. We found it was $800 to $6,000 depending on the type of fishing you want to do. The Tuna fishing was in the thousand range and be careful when looking because a lot of the tours do not include gas in their rates. Two gas stations in that town were $3.80 (close to the end of the town) and $3.99 per gallon, therefore that can add up, and saw some say it was $600 -800 rare more in gas fees.
Park Location: Delta Dragon (Delta Dragon RV Park - Welcome) – This park has a few slots, a laundry room (at cost) for visitors, and they were extremely helpful, and lastly, they were prompt with returning calls and responding to text messages. The cost for the week during our stay was $222.00
If you do not have an RV, there was a hotel close by called “Lighthouse Lodge & Villas”. In addition, during my research for fishing, they offer houseboats that you can rent, based on the pictures they are VERY nice!
Enjoy, travel, explore, learn, and thank you!
